Mobile Mondays at Suletech

suletech

When we first got started with hosting Mobile Monday Yangon, like any other community organizers anywhere, our largest problem was space. Or rather, the lack thereof. We switched locations often and learned a lot about what worked and what didn’t work for us, from an event organizer’s point of view, from each place. The same rang true for other activities organized by ideabox and Code For Change Myanmar. Having constant access to a good space for all our events was high on our priority list, especially for Mobile Monday.

Enter SuleTech, a Myanmar community tech hub where everybody can come to do anything interesting with technology in Myanmar. At 6000 sq ft, it is home and office to three spaces: ideabox Myanmar, a startup incubator which also organizes lots of startup programs and events including Mobile Monday Yangon. Phandeeyar, a Myanmar Innovation Lab, will also call the space home (they’re also hiring, by the way!). Lastly, Suletech will also host a co-working space with a coffee bar and a HP lab.

We’re pleased to announce that all future Mobile Monday events will be hosted right here at Suletech.

Recently, we hosted Mobile Monday Yangon Mobile AppExpo 2014 at SuleTech with more than 100 participants coming to experience AppExpo with us. Despite the numbers, the space was still large enough for an additional capacity of more than 300 people. We’re excited with the possibilities brought by access to the space, and have pencilled in several amazing events for the coming year.

There will not be any Mobile Monday events in December. Happy holidays, stay awesome. See you all next year at Suletech!

Riding Global Tech Trends

MobileMonday Yangon

Zezan Tam is a Melbourne-based entrepreneur who left his job at Boston Consulting Group, then attended Singularity University in Silicon Valley. His time at Singularity kickstarted his thinking and excitement towards technology and entrepreneurship. He is currently working on a number of businesses in Australia, as well as being Entrepreneur in Residence at the University of Melbourne Accelerator Program. He came to Yangon to immerse himself in the Myanmar entrepreneurship scene, and he is interested in investing in talented entrepreneurs here during this exciting growth period.

He was at MobileMonday Yangon’s October open-mic event to share his knowledge and ideas in his talk,  “Riding Global Tech Trends: A lens to think about startup ideas”. Here are his slides for those of you who missed it, or who want to learn more about what he talked about.

October Recap

momooct

Mobile Monday Yangon October took place this past Monday, 27th Oct 2014, with more than 40 entrepreneurs and startups in attendance. This time, the format was different: we had an open mic where anybody who wanted to speak about anything, could. 10 people, 3 minutes each. They could share about anything about business or their personal stories. Members from the Go Project, a global entrepreneurship team that’s working on a on developing an educational syllbus, joined us too.

Some notable presenters:

  • A software engineer from Groupon in the US shared on the software engineering processes in product development cycles
  • An entrepreneur from Singapore discussed how to change the environment with future tech. There were questions from the floor about whether the prices of these types of devices and technology like 3D printing, solar technology and bitcoins were too high, creating a barrier to entry in adoption
  • An investor of Blink Marketing Agency also talked about how investors choose a right startup to invest in. He argued that investors in Myanmar are usually going to take large risks, so entrepreneurs need to show them a plan which can excite investors
  • A local company behind the Pwar Myanmar messaging app shared their plans on the business and execution of their app

Like other Mobile Monday Yangon events, the networking component post-event was the liveliest — it’s when people get to know each other better.

We’ll switch it up some more for November’s Mobile Monday: it’ll be an app expo format where every startup can demo their product at their booths. That will take place at the new ideabox office at MAC tower. Details for that will be announced shortly, so stay tuned!

The Groupie Challenge

MobileMondaySeptember

You’ve now come to know of Mobile Monday as a frequent monthly event in which serious topics are discussed in a not so serious way. But we really like to switch it up as often as we can: next week, you’ll get to hear a surprise collection of speakers at our Open Mic Mobile Monday. Last month, we ran amok, or so we thought, with our Facebook Groupie Photo Challenge.

We tried to, anyway. The idea was for participants at Mobile Monday to get together to make a groupie photo, to be posted on Facebook so that we could pick a winner.

We learned from the low response that even in a space predominantly filled with tech and entrepreneur types, internet connectivity and access to devices is something to be reckoned with — what more for the mainstream Myanmar market. Despite several connectivity channels, it was still too much to expect real-time interaction the way you would elsewhere.

That’s actually why events like Mobile Monday come into play: with fewer than 7% of the population represented online percent, the only way to go is up, especially with all the upcoming infrastructural developments.

We’ll try again in a couple of months and compare the results then. See you at the next Mobile Monday! Remember to RSVP!

What’s Next for Mobile Monday Yangon?

MobileMonday September

Since we started Mobile Monday Yangon in February 2014, we’ve managed to bring together great speakers, international guests, and various members of the local community in learning and sharing from each other. Since then, we’ve featured a diverse number of topics from mobile payments, social media to e-commerce, localisation and much more. We’re constantly asked: what’s next?

Each Mobile Monday Yangon event has been different — and October’s will be no different. It will be radically different from anything we’ve ever done before. We want you to speak at Mobile Monday. Yes, you!

We’re going to open up the floor to one and all, and you are welcome to get onstage to pitch the audience. Introduce yourself and your great idea in 3 minutes or less, so that everyone in the audience gets to know about what you do and what makes you tick (while enjoying a tipple now and then).

As you know, many who attend Mobile Monday in Yangon and elsewhere are key personnel at their companies. As key decision-makers and executives, they are interested in knowing more about the latest developments in the industry, so here’s your chance!

On top of the open pitching session, we’ll also introduce a handful of renowned local and regional startups. We look forward to learning and sharing with you at October’s Mobile monday — more details and RSVP information coming in the next post.

mHealth at Mobile Monday

For all enthusiasts about mobile health (mHealth), Mobile Monday in Mountain View, California on 15 September 2014 featured a host of leading names in the industry. Thomas Jefry, Partner at Arent Fox; Kabir Kasargod, Director of Business Development at Qualcomm Life; Imran Khaliq, Parnter at Aren’t Fox and Wayne Mateski, partner at Arent Fox, came together to discuss mHealth issues. The moderator was Patricia Salber, CEO of Health Tech Hatch. Mobile Monday Silicon Valley is one of the biggest MoMo events the world, and definitely one of the most established. September’s event was sponsored by Microsoft.

mHealth (mobile-health) is the practice of medicine and public health supported by mobile devices, and it is a field which is fundamentally changing the way health care is delivered to patients and administered by health care professionals. The panel brought together professionals immersed in mHealth issues, while using a case study to examine the legal, business, financial, and regulatory pitfalls and key issues faced by companies as they prepare to launch. They discussed pitfalls, FDA compliance, HIPAA compliance, funding, patents, marketing and technology for mHealth startups. Check the video below.

In Myanmar, mHealth services are now available, such as Ooredoo Myanmar’s Maymay product, a free app for parents who are expecting a baby. Maymay app gives to-be parents regular health alerts and tips on how to have a healthy baby, where to find the nearest doctor in the subscriber’s area and many other useful features for parents. As more mHealth services are being rolled out in Myanmar, do share with us your mHealth experiences so far. Hopefully Myanmar can get its own MobileMonday mHealth edition too!

September 2014 Recap

MobileMonday September

MobileMonday Yangon September was once again held at Peperoni Pizza at Union Business Centre. This time, we shook things up a bit by inviting people from the community to tell their personal stories. No better than Ko Thar Htet and Ko Ravi, renowned personalities in the Myanmar technology industry, who had plenty to say about both their battle scars and finest moments.

The first session by Ko Ravi covered the past, present and future of tech in Myanmar, providing a unique perspective which would have benefitted many newcomers to Myanmar. His pitch was that tech actually began to boom in Myanmar as early as 2000, with many important steps being taken from that period, but that it took up till 2014 to see some of those efforts crystallise with the emergence of mobile data and mobile phone penetration.

Ko Htar Htet on the other hand, shared the challenges and problems that local tech entrepreneurs face in Myanmar, as a prominent entrepreneur in Yangon himself. An important concept he shared was that of ‘easy money’  — where people follow the path of money without the requisite passion to truly succeed. He spoke of how tech entrepreneurs focused on service business for financial success, yet there are tradeoffs, as he is learning from his own experience. Many in the audience agreed when he touched on the obstacles faced by startups in Yangon, mostly to do with real estate, and market conditions. Yet the same conditions which make Myanmar such an attractive market — its lack of access to existing technology for the majority of the population — are also obstacles, since a lot of market education has to be done.

If you missed this Mobile Monday, here are the slides:

We look forward to seeing you in October!
